echo ("we", "our", or "us") values your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the echo mobile application (the "App"). By using echo, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

We only collect information that is necessary to provide and improve echo's language learning experience.

1.1 Information You Provide

When you create an account or use the App, we may collect the following personal information:

Email address
Gender
Birthday (used to verify age eligibility and personalize learning)
Profile image
Native language
Learning language

1.2 Voice and Speech Data

echo uses speech recognition to help you practice pronunciation and speaking.

Voice input is captured and processed in real time to evaluate your pronunciation and provide feedback.
Speech recognition is performed using on-device or platform-provided technologies where possible.
Voice data may also be transmitted to our AI systems for the purpose of powering real-time conversational lessons with the echo AI teacher.
We do not store raw voice recordings for general use, except where explicitly required for AI-assisted lesson evaluation or technical troubleshooting.
In audio study rooms (the collaborative voice feature), your microphone audio is transmitted in real time to other participants in the room. We do not record or retain room audio after sessions end.

1.3 Camera and Screen Data

echo uses the camera and screen recording capabilities of your device for certain interactive pronunciation game features.

Camera access is used to support pronunciation games that incorporate visual feedback during gameplay.
Screen recording may be initiated during specific in-app game sessions to capture gameplay for evaluation purposes.
This data is used only within the context of the specific game feature and is not stored or shared beyond what is necessary for that feature to function.
You will be prompted for explicit permission before camera or screen recording access is used.

1.4 User-Generated Content

echo allows users to create and share content within the community. This includes:

Posts: Text and media you publish on the echo social feed.
Comments: Replies you leave on other users' posts.
Reactions: Emoji or other reactions you apply to posts.

This content is stored on our servers and is visible to other users within the App. Please do not share personally sensitive information in posts or comments.

1.5 Audio Room Activity

echo includes a collaborative audio room feature (similar to live audio communities) where users can join rooms to study together by voice.

When you join a room, your microphone audio is broadcast in real time to other room participants.
Room membership (i.e., who is present in a room) may be visible to other users.
We do not record or retain audio from study rooms after a session concludes.

1.6 Automatically Collected Information

When you use the App, we may automatically collect limited technical information, such as:

Device type and operating system
App version
Language preferences
Anonymous usage data (e.g., feature usage, crashes)

This data is used strictly to improve performance, stability, and user experience.

1.7 Subscription and Purchase Information

If you subscribe to echo+, payment processing is handled entirely by Apple App Store or Google Play Store. We do not directly collect or store your payment card details. We may receive confirmation of your subscription status and transaction identifiers from the platform provider and from RevenueCat, our subscription management service.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

Create and manage your echo account
Personalize your language learning experience
Match you with other students learning the same language
Provide speaking, listening, and reading exercises
Evaluate pronunciation and fluency via AI-powered lessons and speech recognition
Operate the echo AI teacher for real-time conversational lessons
Power community features including posts, comments, reactions, and audio study rooms
Process and manage echo+ subscription access
Communicate important updates or account-related messages
Improve and optimize the App's features and performance

We do not sell your personal data.

3. Text-to-Speech, Speech Recognition, AI Lessons, and Audio

echo uses the following technologies:

Speech Recognition (via Expo / device APIs) to analyze spoken phrases during pronunciation exercises and games
AI Voice Agent (echo Teacher): An AI-powered conversational teacher communicates with you by voice during lessons. Voice input is transmitted to our AI systems in real time for processing and response generation.
Offline on-device Text-to-Speech (Piper TTS) to generate natural voice lessons
Background music to enhance the learning experience
Live audio transmission for collaborative study rooms (audio is transmitted to room participants in real time and is not recorded)

Key Privacy Notes

Text-to-speech is generated on-device and does not require sending your data to external servers.
Background audio does not collect or process personal data.
Speech recognition and AI lesson audio are used only for learning features and not for identification purposes.
AI lesson voice sessions may be processed by third-party AI providers under strict data protection agreements.

4. Camera and Screen Recording

echo requests access to your camera and, on supported platforms, screen recording capabilities for specific interactive pronunciation game features.

Camera and screen data are used only during active gameplay sessions.
This data is not continuously monitored, stored beyond the session, or used for any purpose other than the specific feature being used.
You may revoke camera permissions at any time through your device settings, though doing so will disable certain game features.

5. Community Features — Posts, Comments, and Reactions

echo includes a social feed where users can publish posts, comment on others' content, and react to posts.

Content you post is visible to other echo users.
We reserve the right to moderate, remove, or restrict content that violates our Terms of Service.
You are responsible for the content you share. Do not share sensitive personal information publicly.

6. Audio Study Rooms

The audio room feature allows users to join live, voice-based study sessions with other learners.

Your voice is transmitted in real time to other participants when your microphone is active.
Room membership (who has joined a room) is visible to other users in the App.
Audio sessions are not recorded or stored after a session ends.
You may mute yourself at any time during a session.

7. How We Share Information

We do not share your personal information with third parties except in the following limited cases:

Service providers that help operate the App (e.g., hosting, analytics, AI processing, RevenueCat for subscription management), under strict confidentiality agreements
Other users, for content you voluntarily share via posts, comments, reactions, or participation in audio rooms
Legal requirements, if required by law or to protect the safety, rights, or property of users or others

All third parties are required to comply with applicable data protection laws.

8. Data Storage and Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including:

Secure storage and encrypted connections where applicable
Limited access to personal data
Regular monitoring for security vulnerabilities

Despite our efforts, no system is 100% secure. You use echo at your own risk.

9. Data Retention

We retain your personal information only as long as necessary to:

Provide the App's services
Comply with legal obligations
Resolve disputes
Enforce our agreements

You may request deletion of your account and personal data at any time through the App's settings.

10. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

echo is not intended for children under the age of 18 (or the minimum age required by local law).

If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child without proper consent, we will delete it promptly. Community features — including posts, comments, and audio rooms — are also restricted to users who meet our minimum age requirement.

If you use echo from outside your country of residence, your information may be processed and stored in locations with different data protection laws. We take steps to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date and notify you within the App if the changes are significant.

Your continued use of echo after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
